Title:

Pictures taken in California during 1919 & '20

Creator/Contributor:

Hoogendijk, Frederik Van Rossen, creator, photographer.

Abstract:

High quality snapshots neatly presented in an album, taken by Dutch mechanical engineer Frederik Van Rossen Hoogendijk while he worked out of the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California in 1919 and 1920. Images primarily document Hoogendijk's leisure activities and travels in the state. The engineer is presumably depicted throughout the album, as are his family, friends and associates. Activities depicted include hiking, automobile travel, sightseeing and playing tennis. Identified locations include Yosemite Valley, giant sequoia and other features of the Sierra Nevada; Lake Tahoe; the Monterey region and other points of interest along the California coast; and San Francisco, especially the Palace of Fine Arts and shipping scenes along the city's waterfront. Hoogendijk's desk at the Claremont, and views of the hotel vicinity is also depicted in some images. Also documented are agriculture scenes with an emphasis on irrigation machinery, including the large engines of such equipment. Engines of naval vessels are also depicted.
